All MTN Self-Service Instructions | New MTN USSD Codes (Nigeria)

How to Share Data on MTN

Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN), is one of Nigeria’s leading telecommunications providers, offering a wide range of services to millions of subscribers across the country.

Since its inception in 2001, MTN has played a significant role in revolutionizing the telecommunications landscape in Nigeria, providing reliable and innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of its customers.

As the largest mobile network operator in Nigeria, MTN has built a reputation for its extensive coverage, robust network infrastructure, and customer-centric approach.

With a mission to connect people and enrich lives, MTN offers a diverse array of services, including voice calls, data plans, mobile money services, value-added services, and much more.

The company’s commitment to technological advancements and user-friendly services has made it a favorite among Nigerians of all ages and demographics.

Whether it’s staying connected with loved ones, accessing the internet on the go, or availing convenient financial services, MTN continues to empower its customers to lead more connected and fulfilling lives.

In today’s world, where convenience and efficiency are paramount, self-service options have become increasingly essential for consumers.

MTN understands the importance of enabling its customers to manage their accounts, subscriptions, and services with ease, and that’s where self-service USSD codes come into play.

USSD, or Unstructured Supplementary Service Data, is a technology that allows mobile users to interact with a service provider’s systems by dialing specific shortcodes directly from their mobile devices.

These USSD codes act as a gateway to a range of self-service options, empowering MTN customers to perform various tasks quickly and conveniently without the need to visit physical stores or contact customer support.

By utilizing MTN’s self-service USSD codes, customers can perform a wide range of actions, such as checking their data balance, recharging their airtime, subscribing to different data plans, sharing data with friends and family, transferring airtime to others, and much more.

This level of control and autonomy empowers customers to tailor their mobile experience to suit their individual preferences and needs, enhancing their overall satisfaction with MTN’s services.

The primary purpose of this blog is to serve as a comprehensive resource for MTN customers in Nigeria who want to make the most of the self-service USSD codes offered by the telecommunications giant.

We understand that staying up-to-date with the latest codes and knowing how to utilize them efficiently can sometimes be challenging amidst the dynamic nature of technology.

All MTN New USSD Codes (Nigeria)

Here are the new MTN codes, which are also applicable to all other network providers in Nigeria as directed by NCC:

  • Airtime recharge: *311* Voucher PIN #
  • Check airtime balance: *310#
  • Borrow airtime: *303#
  • Buy data: *312#
  • Share airtime or data: *321#
  • Check data balance: *323#
  • Value-added services: *305#
  • Link NIN to SIM: *996#
  • Customer care: 300
  • Check NIN status: *996#
  • Port out: 3232
  • DND: 2442

To use these codes, simply dial them on your phone’s keypad and follow the prompts. For example, to recharge your airtime, you would dial *311* Voucher PIN #.

Change The Default MTN Share PIN

Before you can share airtime or data with others, the default MTN Share PIN must be changed, which is 0000 by default. Here is how to change the default MTN Share PIN:

  1. Using SMS: Compose an SMS in the following format: “Default PIN New PIN New PIN ” and send it to 321. E.g: “0000 1234 1234 ” then send to 321. Once the PIN is successfully changed, you will receive an SMS confirming the update.
  2. Using USSD: Dial *321*Default PIN*New PIN*New PIN# on your phone and press send. E.g: *321*0000*1234*1234# and then send. Upon successful PIN change, you will receive a confirmation SMS.

After changing the default MTN Share PIN using either of the methods above, you can then proceed with transferring airtime or data using SMS or USSD:

How to Transfer Airtime on MTN

Transfer airtime using SMS:

Compose an SMS with the format: “Transfer, Recipient’s Number, Amount, PIN” and send it to 321. For example, send an SMS with ‘Transfer 08031234567 1500 1234’ to 321. You will then receive an SMS asking for confirmation; respond with ‘YES’ to complete the transfer.

Transfer airtime using USSD:

To transfer airtime using USSD

  1. Dial *321# on your phone.
  2. Select 1. ‘Airtime share’ and send.
  3. On the next screen, select 1. ‘Transfer airtime’ and send.
  4. Enter the recipient number and send.
  5. Enter airtime transfer amount.
  6. Confirm the transaction.

Alternatively, simply dial *321*Recipient’s Number*Amount*PIN# on your phone and press send or OK. For example, dial *321*08031234567*1500*1234# and then send/OK. Once the transfer is successful, you will receive a confirmation message.

Important points to note:

  1. Airtime transfers can only be done in Naira amounts and not in kobo (e.g., NGN71.00 is allowed, but not NGN71.99).
  2. The transfer amount must be within the range of NGN50.00 to NGN5,000.00 for a single transaction.
  3. You can transfer up to NGN100,000.00 from your phone to either a single or multiple MTN accounts every day.
  4. There is no limit to the maximum number of transactions per day.
  5. If your MTN prepaid account balance is insufficient to cover the transfer amount, the transaction will not go through, and you will receive an error message.
  6. Postpaid customers can only transfer airtime when their account is in a positive balance; transfers are not allowed if the account balance is negative. For instance, if your account balance is N-300.00, you won’t be able to use MTN Share. However, if your account balance is N1,000.00, you can transfer airtime up to the available N1,000.00 in your account.

How to Link NIN to MTN

The National Identification Number (NIN) is a 11-digit unique identification number issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to all Nigerians and legal residents.

It is a mandatory requirement for a number of activities in Nigeria, including opening a bank account, getting a passport, and linking your SIM card to your NIN.

If you are an MTN subscriber, you can link your NIN to your SIM card in four ways:

  1. Link with USSD: Dial *996*your 11 digit NIN# or simply dial *996# and follow the prompts. This is the easiest way to link your NIN. Just make sure that you are using the phone number that you want to link your NIN to.
  2. Download the MyMTN app: You can also link your NIN through the MyMTN app. To do this, download the MyMTN app on Play or App Store, open the app and tap on the “Profile” tab. Then, tap on “National Identification Number” and enter your NIN.
  3. Visit the MTN website: You can also link your NIN through the MTN website. To do this, go to https://nin.mtn.ng/ and enter your NIN.
  4. Link with SMS: Text “NIN-Your 11 digit NIN” to 996 (Example: NIN-12345678901 and send to 996).

After submitting your NIN using any of the above methods, you may need to wait for your NIN to be verified before it can be linked to your sim card. This shouldn’t take more than 24 hours.

It is important to note that you cannot link your NIN to another person’s SIM card and vice versa. The NCC has warned Nigerians against doing this.

How to Check MTN Number

To check an MTN number, dial *123# using the specific sim card. On the list of options, select option 1. “Account Info”. On the next list of options, again, select 1. “My Number”.
